Note: This is a Virtual server with Active Directory and SQL 2012 installed.

When starting Server Manager Roles:" Error appears"  Same when I click on Features " Error Features"

When I click on "Error details" at the bottom of the window I get the " Unexpected error refreshing Server Manager:

Exception HRESULT: 0x800F0900.

I  Downloaded the Update Readiness tool and ran it and I get this error" Update is not applicable to your computer"

I also ran IE11-Windows6.1-KB3170106-x64.msu and get "already installed"

So I'm not sure how to proceed

BTW: I run  sfc /scannow - returns no errors

Thanks for any tips that you may have.

Hight time of activity disc

For some time, ie a few days after installing the update from April, the system disk activity time is very high (jumps from 0 to 100%). The event preview always shows the id 153 disk event. After entering the emergency mode, the errors disappear. I made the sfc / scannow command in safe mode because it would normally suspend the system. The command has repaired some of the files, but this has not improved the system operation in the normal mode. This is windows server 2012 r2.

Black screen when connecting to VM

I have been running Hyper-V on Windows 10 for close to a couple of years now.  Today, every time I attempt to log into the VM I get a black screen.  Sometimes, I can see the Windows desktop after a very long wait, but the start button doesn't work and there is nothing in the task bar.  Then, I get a pop-up that says "The application is not responding.  The program may respond again if you wait."  And it gives me the option to "end process.'

Rebooting takes forever on the VM and it does the same thing again - black screen, very long wait, empty task bar... etc.

Ending the process takes me back to the black screen.  Hyper-V Manager shows the VM is running.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Freezes almost every day

Hi,

I have a client which uses a Server 2012 R2 Standard as, AD,DHCP,DNS,File, Print server and connection with the O365 enviremont

We have this strage issue since a month or 2 that the server freezes almost every day for a few minutes, happens only in the morning.
During this freez i'm not able to access the server anymore, and the only thing that stops working are the printers.
Everything else keeps working (Internet, file access etc)

Their are no backup's runing during the freez and also no AV scans.

IT's a VM on a Hyper-V Machine, see specs below of the VM

OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
4 Virtual CPU's
8GB Startup Memory
Dynamic Memory enabled
Latest Windows Server updates

Any idea's how i can check why the server freezes? we are already thinking of building a new server if this keeps going on for to long.

Dear Experts,

Can we restrict the number of VMs that can be created on a single Hyper-V host?

We have Windows Server 2016 stand alone Hyper-V host and we need to restrict only 45 VMs on this host.

Many thanks...

Hi, my first time posting here.

We recently had many bluescreen in our Hyper-V environment and we would like to know what exactly caused this.

I am not sure if someone here is able to read anything in the bluescreen informations, but if yes, I can provide more infos if needed.

Here is 3 screenshots of the bluescreen informations from 1 Virtual Machine that crashed a lot.

We have multiple VM that are crashing and all physical machine never crashed.

It would be very appreciated if someone could help us find what is happening.

what is the meaning of deleting checkpoint from a virtual machine

$

I'm quoting microsoft doc

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualization/hyper-v-on-windows/user-guide/checkpoints

When you delete a checkpoint, Hyper-V merges the .avhdx and .vhdx files for you. Once completed, the checkpoint's .avhdx file will be deleted from the file system.

Let's say that my virtual machine has 2 checkpoints created one from the date 10/06/19 and another one 28/06/19

if i'll delete both checkpoints and merge will happen and todays date is 02/07/19

will i lose data on my virtual machine? what are the consequences?

Windows 10 Enterprise virutal machines frequent disconnects due to RemoteFX on Hyper V

$

Hello,

We run Windows server 2016 on our host machines, and we connect to our hosts through an remote desktop gateway, we have run into an issue where users who remote in through the gateway are getting disconnected for about 5-10 seconds and then their session is restored. This happens about once every 30-60 minutes.

Event viewer is throwing the following errors

Disconnect trace:CUMRDPConnection Disconnect trace:'calling spGfxPlugin->PreDisconnect()' in CUMRDPConnection::PreDisconnect at 4726 err=[0xc], Error code:0xC

'Failed GetConnectionProperty' in CUMRDPConnection::QueryProperty at 3015 err=[0x80004001]

I get flooded with these events about 100 times a minute, (not each event, just a collection of related events in one minute).

I'm looking for a way to disable remotefx so the host will not allow the client computers to use remotefx anymore. I tried a few things such as

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations
DWORD: fEnableRemoteFXAdvancedRemoteApp: 0x00000001 (0) - On remote gateway server

The DWORD above is not on any of my host machines, I was concidering adding it and setting the value to zero, but I'm not sure if this will do the job.

I also tried to disable this in group policy,by disabling everything remoteFX related other than the remotefx entry related to compression algorithms.

Has anyone delt with this before? I would greatly appreciate any guidance.

HyperV Cluster and DCs - AD-less Cluster Bootstrapping

$

Morning

can someone clarify for me if the chicken and the egg situation with a cluster boot needing to contact a DC now resolved with AD-less Cluster Bootstrapping?

We are running at the moment Server 2012 R2 hosts in cluster and in the process of migrating the guest server farms to Server 2019.

Part of that process has been to migrate the virtual DCs to 2019 which I have now done. As I recall the general advice was NOT to put your DCs on the failover cluster as in order for the cluster to boot the hosts need to be able to contact a DC; the chicken and the egg. If your DCs are on the cluster which is unable to gain quorum as it cant contact the 'off' DC - you end up in a world of grief.

I know AD-less Cluster Bootstrapping came in with 2012 - but is there a way to tell if it is actually enabled / on / configured?

Has anyone had experience of testing this?

cheers

Recommendation of NTP server in VM(For OS windows server 2019 std)

$

Dear Team,

For configuring NTP server, below are the client requirement:

1) Ntp Server should created in VM(Hyper-V)

2) Don't add NTP server in domain.

3) Don't connect internet to NTP server

4) That NTP server communicated through local CMOS.

Now we have created NTP server in VM(os is windows server 2019 std) but client system has getting failed to connect/sync with NTP.

My question is:

1) Is it possible to work NTP in VM as per above requirement?

Kindly provide us the solution.

Thanks & Regards,

Sachin Pagar

Unable to start replicated virtual machine. Key protector could not be unwrapped

I have 2 virtual machines that are replicating to another Hyper-V host.  One machine works and starts up fine and seems to run fine, but if I try to start my other VM it immediately come up with the error "the application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'server'.  'Server' failed to start.  'Server' could not initialize.  The key protector could not be unwrapped. Details are included in the HostGuardianService-Client event log.

In the details section it does say local certificates not found : signing Count = 0, encrypt = 0

I am not encrypting the drives of the hyper visor or the VMs that are running below it and I am not using shielded machines.  Any help would  be great.  Thanks

Working on a new host machine. Setting up the first VM through Windows Admin Center but the new VM creation wizard won't allow me to select an ISO file although it says that is what is required. Any insight on how this can be done would be helpful. Thank you.

Scale Out Cluster vs Clustered Shared Volume Usage

$

Hey everyone,

I tried using Windows Server category for the post but for some reason it's not available. Feel free to move it accordingly.

So I've been reading some information about clustering in general in Microsoft environments and I have a big doubt.

Microsoft says that scale out file servers are meant for storing virtual disks or SQL instances in an active-active way of clustering through clustered shared volumes. I can understand the statement as that will make the volumes accessible by the cluster at any time with no downtime. However, you can also create clustered shared volumes, without the need of choosing "Scale Out File Server" as an option, and you can also store virtual disks there for a Hyper-V host. So what would be the difference between these two if at least in theory the work in the same way.

I think I need some light in this dark thought I'm having for clarification haha.

Thanks in advance!

Help - Remote Desktop Services will stop working after 32 days

Hi Folks,

Hard Ware: IBM 3500 M4 128 System Memory - RAID 10

OS software all on same box:

Host is: 2012 r2

VM1 name is:    SQL1 ( running 2008 r2)

VM2 name is:    T1 (Terminal server) ( running (2008 r2 )

VM3 name is:    T2 (Terminal server)  (running 2012 r2)

VM4 name is:    B2B  ( running (2008 r2 )

VM5 name is:    API  (running 2012 r2)

I have started a in-place conversion from 2008 r2 > 2012 r2. I have converted two over successfully.

VM1 has two domain controllers SQL1 and T1, It has SQL2012 and AD on the same VM.

The server VM2 (T2) is the one  bringing  up the message, it is a in-place upgrade from 2008 > 2012.

I'm running out time I have procrastinated long enough.

This is a production environment so need your help to get this straight.

The system is several years old and never had any major problems before I started this in-place upgrade.

Any comments will be much appreciated.

BTW... will the 2008 Licenses work with 2012? Could that be the problem?

Thanks, Jim
