I'm pretty sure I had the Hyper-v role installed on my server.
Last night I installed the Active Directory Services role. On reboot, neither role is installed.
My intention is to use the server for virtual environments; to help with application development on different server environments.
What is the recommended setup?
Install a VM and run the DC role on the VM server and leave the hyper-v role on the host server (or vice-versa)

I have approximately 518 End Users who are configured to have the following folders (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and Pictures) redirected to a file server. The End Users are using Windows 10 versions 1709, 1803, or 1809 x64. The File Server have Windows Server 2016 Datacenter version 1607 x64.
At the beginning of the year 2018, we had no issue with Folder Redirection. All users were able to open applications and access files from the redirected folders as normal . On December 2018, some users reported having issues with Explorer.exe freezing after trying to open an application. Below are the troubleshooting steps my colleagues and I have taken. (The following steps did not resolve the issue)
- Open Task Manager and restart Explorer.exe
- Remove the employee's Windows profile and have him/her login again. This will create a new Windows profile and enforce our Group Policies.
- Assign a new computer to the employee.
Below is how we determined the issue is with the Folder Redirection. I will be executing an application that we use to present the computer screen/s to a conference room TV. Application Name: ClickShare
1. Login on a domain joined computer with my network test account. My test account is part of the Folder Redirection security group.
2. Due to our security settings, I have to copy the executable from ClickShare to the Desktop folder.
3. Double-click on the ClickShare icon.
4. Explorer.exe freezes. A few minutes later, Windows become unresponsive.
5. Force the computer to shutdown.
6. Followed Microsoft's instructions to do a clean-boot. Repeat steps 1-5. Issue still replicates.
7. Remove my network test account from the Folder Redirection security group.
8. After waiting a few minutes, login again on the same computer.
9. Double-click on the ClickShare icon. Issue does not replicate.
As a temporary solution, I have my End Users save/copy small applications (i.e ClickShare) to a local folder that is not redirected to our File Server. However this solution will not work when I have new users. My co-workers and I have witnessed the Explorer.exe will not respond after the new user logs in.
Could a Windows update caused the issue explained above?
P.S. The issue will also replicate when the computer is not connected to a network.
Could Logman.exe be causing this loss of connectivity?
Virtual Server 2012 R2 Domain Controller is losing internet connectivity after rebooting.
Restarting Active Directory Domain Services Service brings the virtual server back online.

I have several VMs running under Hyper-V with configuration version 9.0.
Using the command Get-VMHostSupportedVersion I receive the following output:
Name Version IsDefaultSo there is a new 9.1 configuration available, but it's not set as default. How can I change to 9.1 as default?
I am also unable to upgrade my existing VMs from 9.0 to 9.1, using Update-VMVersion <vmname>.
Windows tells me that I am already on the maximum supported version for my VM, so why is there a 9.1 config if it is not available for an upgrade?

I have a multi node setup where each node has 4 10Gb NICs (2 are non iWARP). I plan to use the iWARP NICs for S2D and the other 2 NICs for the VM/Management network.
Is it best to use Switch Embedded Teaming for both sets of NICs?
I am trying to find the benefit of using SET on the non-iWARP set of NICs.
First, I have no idea if this is the right forum or right category, so I guessed.
Here's one licensing scenario I am trying to find out if it is legal or not, so far even our authorized rep can't tell me if it is or is not. On the current host, which runs 2012 R2, there are 2 2012 R2 guests and one fully licensed 2016 guest. We need to upgrade one of the 2012 R2 VMs to 2016. So is is that legal? In the end we'd have the host at 2012 R2, one guest at 2012 R2, and two 2016 VMs. Or, would I be facing having to upgrade the host to 2016 (getting raked for another full license in the process)? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hey Everyone, We've got a Hyper-V 2012 Virtual Server that has started having issues several weeks ago. If the server is left running, it will crash every 8 hours, sometimes to the SECOND from the previous boot time stamp. Its almost always within a minute of the 8 hour interval. I've checked scheduled tasks, scheduled backups, SQL maintenance.....nothing!
However, if we reboot the server, say at 7 hours and 50 minutes, it will not crash and continue to run happily for another 8 hours.....at which time it will crash again. The only thing we get after a crash is the crappy new blue screen that reports "Registry Error." The event log is incredibly clean with no suggestion as to the cause. We have three other Virtual servers
that are Hyper-V virtual servers and they are working great. We've ran all kinds of virus and malware scans and everything is clean. By the way the Host Server is 2016 R2 Standard
Anyone have any ideas, or seen anything similar?

Just for one machine I found huge number of AVHDX files. (The list below is not full)
In Hyper-V Manager and PowerShell I get this:
In other words I can't understand whether this virtual machine does have checkpoints or does not.
Please advise how I can get rid of those AVHDX files and get the size of the virtual disk back 200GB.

avma (automatic activation) is not supported in 2012 standard only in datacenter... so now is the question

my IT dpeartment is trying to get RemoteFX working under Windows Server 2012 R2 but we ran into some trouble. We are using a HP Proliant 380p GEN8 with NVIDIA P4000 GPUs. The server recognizes the GPUs and we can configure RemoteFX on the host and the guest VMs. The VMs also see the RemoteFX WDDM device in the device manager. The main problem we are having right now is the performance of the VMs, the cpu offloading during graphic intense workloads works just fine but the overall performance isnt bearable. If we manage to connect to the VM with the configured 4 monitors (which is maybe a 3 in 10 chance of happening), the resulting screen tearing makes it so working isnt possible. We've tried configuring the NVIDIA control panel and the BIOS of the HP server but without any results.
If someone has any experience with RemoteFX under Windows Server 2012 R2 and can help me with this problem i'd be gratefull

I'm trying to sort out a situation. We have 2 servers, Server 2012R2, each with a single NIC and they are connected directly to the internet. On each host is Hyper-V and multiple VMs connected. Each VM has its own public IP used by our roaming clients. We
are trying to cut down on our public IP needs so we want to change how the system works.
We want our roamers to start a VPN connection to the host machine, then use RDP to connect to their respective VM... But I cannot seem to get the Routing and Remote Access to play fair. I have managed to get the VPN side of things to work and that is about
it. I cannot seem to figure out how to allow routing to the internal VMs. VMs also still need internet access.
