Hi there,

I'm just wondering if there are any ways Hyper-V to display multiple virtual machine in one group tabs as other virtual machines does. Does Microsoft offer such function?

VDI licensing, confused???

So we have a need to run one fat client on the network, this client is a workstation that already has a licensed OEM copy of Windows 10 (was purchased with the workstation). They want to be able to access a VDI instance being hosted off the server, which is running server 2012 R2 (also completely licensed).

This will only be used from this one workstation/client, so I guess I need a license for the template I will be creating for the actual Virtual machine (will use an evaluation copy and will purchase a license this week)

Am I correct in thinking this is the only thing I need? We have CALs for all workstations, etc. and as I mentioned the workstation has it's own license so I think it's good.

Does a printer connected to a computer through a virtual USB port have an IP address? If so, how can I find it? If not, how can I create one?

Essentially, I am just trying to find the IP address for a printer that I want to connect to a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4. From what I understand, I need the IP address in order to do this. If someone knows another way to connect a printer to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 that does not involve the use of an IP address, then that would solve my problem also.

Currently, the printer (which is an HP LaserJet P1102w) is connected to 2 different computers running Windows 10 through a virtual USB port (called USB005). I have tried to find the IP address for the HP printer by viewing the Printers and Devices connected to one of these computers, looking at the properties of the printer, and clicking on the ports tab in the properties window. It does not list the IP address for this printer on the general list of ports. So then I tried selecting the printer and clicking "Configure Port". However, when I click "Configure Port", I get the error message "An error occurred during port configuration. This operation is not supported."

I have also tried printing a test page, which also does not contain an IP address.

I have also tried using the command function (typing cmd after clicking the start button) to retrieve the IP address. Following some instructions I found online, I did manage to retrieve some data. However, I am not a tech person and have no idea how to read this data, especially considering that the computer I am trying to retrieve the data through has 4 printers connected to it and I only need the IP address for one of these printers.

One theory I have is that the printer does not have an IP address since it is connected through a virtual USB port. If this is the case, how do I assign an IP address?

Otherwise, if anyone knows how to find the IP address for this printer in this situation, please help me.

Alternatively, as I mentioned before, if anyone knows another way to connect a printer to an Android device that does not involve the use of an IP address, that would also be super helpful.

Hyper-V problem with HD4600 graphics driver

Hi all,

I have a Dell M3800 with Intel core i7 and NVidia K1100M. This machine is running
Windows 10 Education 14393.222. The Intel driver for HD4600 is 15.40.28.4501.
I have one external display connected through the displayport connector.

Whenever I activate Hyper-V, I get a garbled graphics configuration: Windows 10 is seeing
6 external displays instead of one. I can only work in clone desktop mode, not in extend desktop mode.
Moreover the screen is flickering and redisplay is slow.

This is about the host. I haven't try to run any virtual machine.

Any idea what I should try to overcome this problem ?

Thanks for your help,

Fabrice

We have a Windows 2008 VM on a Windows 2012 R2 host.

We need to move this guest to a new host which is again a Windows 2012 R2. The hyper v manager does not show both the host on the same console? is that normal?

which is the best way to move this vm without having a disaster.

Hi

I have a domain named test.loc for example in place A some domain users login to domain in place B where is 30 km away from here ( Place A ) and the network is stablished via wireless link.

In place B domain users want to open documents which are saved in their computer, Microsoft word ( or excel ... ) opens but it is almost blank and it show nothing. Now if I log in locally with built in user or domain admin that documents open correctly.

I checked a solution that i found on microsoft forums which said to chand a value in regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters

and then

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Internet

but I had no Internet in common and somewhere I had no Office  after Microsoft

Hyper-V 2016: Number of VM's per virtual switch?

$

Hello,

I am working with a client that has a new Windows Server 2016 box running Hyper-V.  We migrated a couple of VM's (one 2008R2 and one 2012) to it and I had difficulty getting them to communicate on the network.  The host has 4 NIC's and I created four virtual switches.  After troubleshooting for some time I managed to get one VM communicating on the network by disabling VMQ on the host's NICs.  However, the other VM still had no connectivity.  I had it on the same virtual switch as the one that did have connectivity to rule out any issues with the other NICs or upstream connectivity/VLAN issues etc.  After spending a certain amount of time trying to figure out why the second VM had no connectivity, I advised the client to open a case with Microsoft.

He opened the case and it was worked on yesterday.  The client reports that they moved the problem VM to another virtual switch and it gained connectivity.  I had it on its own switch at one point and it wasn't communicating so I don't know why it suddenly worked.

However, the crux of my post is this: the MS engineer the client was working with told him that you could have ONE AND ONLY ONE virtual machine per virtual switch.  I immediately called B.S. on this with the client but said I'd research to see if that changed in 2016, but I seriously doubted it did.  I researched and it appears I'm correct.  It would be ridiculous to think you had to have one physical NIC per virtual machine on a 2016 host (though it would be great marketing for a move to VMware).

Can someone verify that this Microsoft engineer is completely wrong?

Thank you,

Toni

issues with remote desktop

I have a server on vmware cloud running server2012r2. I keep on getting alerts from an external source that RDP keeps on going down. I have installed the rdp services role. When I get alerts sometimesI cannot login to the server using RDP. Looking through the event viewer the only error that is triggering around the same time is an schannel error. Event Viewer says : The schannel error state is 1203.  From what I can see that would not be effecting remote desktop to the server. Can someone point me in the right direction to get this fixed?

NTFS-rights

If I have a shared folder with allmost full rights, the "erase", "erase subfolder and files", "own it" and change rights" unchecked, then one should be able, as an ordinary user, to change a file in it and re-save it without getting authority-errors, right? We´re getting the errors. The only way to change names on folder inside the shared folder and resaving files is for me to set the "erase subfolders and files" on/checked?

Server Licensing rules after using Disk2VHD

$

I would like to virtualize a number my physical servers. We have a variety of server licensing, Open Business, Retail, and OEM. My google research skills may need some improvement because I cannot find anything on licensing of Virtual Servers.

I understand that Server 2016 Standard allows up to two Virtual guests without additional licenses so long as the physical host is not running anything else other than the virtual guests.

What I can't confirm is if that physical server can host virtual guests that have their own independent licenses. And if so, am I in violation of some of the license types (like Retail or OEM) if I use Disk2VHD to virtualize the server? I'm confident that Hyper-V Server allows me to host as many guests as the hardware is capable of hosting. But I would like to use one of my physical servers running Server 2016 Standard to host a few of my virtual guests in addition to the SQL Server 2016 that is already installed on the physical host.

In short:

1. Can I host more than two virtual guests on a standard server so long as the guests have their own licenses independent of the host?

2. Can I virtualize any server, regardless of the license type, using Disk2VHD without violating the license?

Thanks in advance!

Hardware serial number of virtual disk in hyper-v

Hyper-V on Server 2012 R2

Is there a way to assign a hardware serial number to a virtual disk in hyper-v.  I have an application that references the hard disk serial number for licensing and it appears the serial number is blank to the operating system (server 2012 R2).

I am not looking for the volume serial number I need the hardware serial number.

Get-PhysicalDisk | select uniqueID, serialnumber

when I run this powershell script in the virtual machine I get a blank serial number.

In VMware I can enable the serial number by adding 'disk.EnableUUID' to the configuration file.

thanks
