How to copy a virtual drive

$

I saw a few of the related topics but none really answered my question. Here's the issue: I have a Windows Server 2012 virtual machine Hyper-V with Microsoft Exchange installed on it. Long story short, I made the boot drive way too large, and it won't let me compact it now.  It also has a data drive for the mailbox database.  What I'd like to do is just copy the contents of the original boot drive into a second much smaller boot drive, connect this VM to the new boot drive, and then delete the old drive.

What's the best way to do this?

Guest OS Frezzeing on Virtual Host

Hello Everyone,
I am looking for a second opinion into an issue we are experiencing.

We have a virtual server running server 2012 R2 Hyper-V. It has 6 Guest OS's on it (Server 2012 R2) Running web servers.

Every so often i find 1 virtual "dead in the head" where it will not let me login via the console but continues to operates in terms of Ping and i can telnet on to the server via port 80. I cannot file browse to the server either.

Looking at the performance of the hyper-v host i  cannot see an issue.

Could anyone point me in a good direction to start diagnosing this? I am going to guess its resource related even though the box is well specced:

Host spec:

20 x 2.50GHz Cores (40 Logical)

128GB OF RAM

480GB x 4 SSD - Raid 10

Each Guest Has: (6 Guests)

6 Cores On 1 Socket.

16GB Of RAM

Thank you.

Need to run 7 Virtual Machines

Hello All,

I am currently in a situation where I need to purchase a server that will be intended to run 7 virtual machines at a time.  These VMs will be running Active Directory, Exchange, Sharepoint, RMS, SQL, and 2 of them will be client machines.  They do not have to be the fastest running systems in the world and will only be linked to one another.  Can anyone point me in a direction to purchase or even build a system for this work load as I have never done this before?  I am wondering if there are certain types of systems I should be looking at or what hardware requirements I may be looking at:  Based on my estimate I see a need for at least 6 core processor (i7 or xeon), 32 Gigs of ram, 2 1tb hard drives, and a decent GPU.

Any feedback would be great.

Hello,

I have built up new 2012 R2 standard edition with VOL license key.

The volume Data (D:) was not optimized because an error was encountered: Neither Slab Consolidation nor Slab Analysis will run if slabs are less than 8 MB. (0x8900002D)

Can anybody help me with this error?

Also im wondering if the Default scheduled defrag Job in a VM make sense in my Environment.

Thanks for your help and / or suggestions.

Hello,

I have setup Windows 2012 R2 Standard Version host machine.  Hyper-V setup successful. Host machine already activate license.

I have got a problem is when VM connecting with Internal virtual Switch.  It will not able to process Windows activation.  If it connected using External Virtual Switch, it can successful do windows activation.  However, using External Virtual Switch, one more WAN IP will be used.

I am using ICS method to share the network interface to Internal Virtual Switch.

Is it what problem and how to resolve it?

Thanks!

Trying to P2V after failed Software RAID 1

I will try to summarize all what has happened and where I'm at now currently:

Server is 2008 R2 (DC, exchange, IIS, SQL, etc) setup originally setup with software RAID 1.   At some point years ago the software RAID had failed and the second disk wasn't part of the mirror anymore and it was never fixed in disk management. Last week the server and wouldn't boot as the primary drive failed.  I selected secondary plex during startup just to see if that disk was still functioning, which to my suprise it did boot up but data was years old.

At that point, I inserted Windows 2008 R2 DVD and started System Recovery from previous backup onto secondary plex drive.  Once complete, the server was backup and running.  Changed the system startup variable to secondary plex so it would boot that drive if restarted.

I am now trying to virtualize the server using disk2vhd in order to move it onto new hardware, however each time I try it fails with I/O error. I have re-tried multiple times stopping all major services to minimize I/O during disk2vhd, but still errors out about 3/4 way through.  I have run checkdisk and it repaired a few bad sectors on the secondary plex drive, yet still fails during disk2vhd.  I am currently running a defrag on the disk as it reported 36% defragmention and will try offline disk2vhd once complete using System Center VMM 2012 (not R2 as that's been removed - found that out the hard way!).

I'm worried this disk has underlying errors which is why it failed years ago and Windows broke the mirror and why it won't work with online disk2vhd.

I have attached a picture of Disk Management which I find interesting as it shows Disk 0 as unknown (Not Initialized), Disk 1 having errors (can "Reactivate Disk" though unsure if that does anything destructive?), and then a missing disk at the bottom which I can also reactivate. I'm not sure if restoring the last working backup from disk 0 somehow messed up Disk 1 or confused it?  BIOS reports Disk 0 as 0MB so I'm thinking that drive is no good anymore.

I guess what I'm looking for with this post is any answer or suggestion as to why disk2vhd might be failing, whether an offline disk2vhd maybe a better successful option, and what (if anything) I should do in Disk Management with these drives in their current state. I don't have a replacement 500GB drive for the mirror and I don't plan on getting one as I already have a new Hyper-V 2012 Core server setup to replace this failing server.  I just can't seem to get it to virtualize using online disk2vhd and wondering if it has something to do with the current drive setup/situation?

environment:  2 2012 Hosts, connection broker + rdweb (same vm), no gateway, all 2012 OS.  Standard deployment on the 2 hosts.

I have a 2012 RDS installation of personal VDI.  Users connect to the RDweb server and launch their assigned VDI from there.  Users are experiencing random connection issues when connecting to their VDI via the RDWeb portal.  Here are some events in the logs:

Event 8964 Remote Desktop Virtualization Host failed to process the orchestration request because virtual desktop [VM7REMSBUCJ] is busy processing cleanup from previous logoff event.

Event 8467 Remote Desktop Virtualization Host failed to get redirection authentication information from the virtual machine [VM7REMSBUCJ] .

The events above correspond with a remote users attempting to login in the morning to a VDI with a state of shutdown.

VM taking Space on SAN

After Virtualizing the data center, Company staff report that there are dozens of VMs taking space on the SAN, but do not have any I/O going to them. These VMs have not been powered on in weeks or months. What do you call for this scenario? How do you overcome it using today’s available solution?

You are asked to configure two HP c3000 enclosures with flex10 modules. Both enclosures are in the same Datacentre and will be hooked up to the same network switches. There is no plan to use multi enclosure stacking, and does not have a virtual connect enterprise manager license to configure the virtual connect domains. What should you do regarding the MAC address ranges?

After creating VM's using Hyper-V Server 2012, am I allowed to deploy client images say Win 7 on those VM's. If yes,<o:p></o:p>

Do I need to be licensed for each client images that is deployed on respective VM's ?

New Virtual Servers do not see the network

We have a Server 2012 with 3 Virtual Servers currently running. We had a fourth Virtual but after a update and restart it stopped seeing the network. We tried changing the IP address, rolling back updates, tried removing and adding the Virtual Switch and still it doesn't work. Since it wasn't in production yet we just scrapped it and started fresh, the problem now is that every new Virtual Server we try to make has the same issue. We didn't make any major changes other then running updates. We have been all over the forums but nothing seems to fit. Any suggestions or thing we didn't think of?

[Hyper-V] Too Much Hardware Resources?

$

Hello,

I have a Small Business Server 2008 standard (SBS2008) install that isvirtualized. The virtual was installed and set up on Hyper-V Server 2008 originally 5 years ago. I simply copied the virtual server from 2008 to a new set of hardware runningHyper-V Server 2012 R2 with NUMA virtualization enabled

The new hardware is a Dell PowerEdge R520 server with dual Xeon E5-2420 2.2 GHZ processors, 96 GB Ram (16384MB @ 1600 mhz x 6 DIMMs spanned across 2 NUMA nodes), and 6 600GB Seagate Cheetah 15K RPM SAS 6Gbs drives in a RAID 10 configuration on a Dell RAID Perc H710P (which is made by LSI)  and we know that our disk I/O benchmark tops out at3.5 Gbps read and write on the appropriate file sizes that they would typically read and/or write. The NICs are dual gigabit Broadcom NetXtreme NICs teamed together through powershell (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj130847.aspx)

In short, the new hardware is FAST. Really fast.

On the SBS2008 install, we initially assigned 18 logical processors and 24 GB of ram because we thought let's throw as much resources to it as possible to ensure it is also fast.

Up until yesterday, nobody was having a problem, for approximately two weeks. Then for no reason, the server begins to perform horribly - pings to itself, from itself, would avg around 80 ms, spike as high as 300 - 400 ms and not go below 10 ms. This should always be <1 ms. Pings to the Hyper-V server from a workstation were consistently <1 ms. Pings to the other virtualized server (Server 2008 R2 Enterprise running remote desktop services with 56 GB ram assigned and a lot of processors) were also consistently< 1 ms. From Hyper-V to the SBS2008 virtual were also as bad as pinging SBS2008 from itself to itself. Not until I was able to stop Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server did the server start to respond 'normally' again. I then shut down the server and decreased ram to 12 GB and logical processors from 18 to 8. I also disabled NUMA virtualization. Since yesterday at 3 pm, the server has been performing great.

Questions:

1. Could it be possible that we had assigned too many logical processors or RAM initially to the SBS2008 virtual guest?

2. Could it be possible NUMA virtualization was causing these issues?

3. Is it possible the issue could still not be resolved and would represent itself again in two weeks?

4. This SBS2008 virtual guest is a 5-year old install, installed according to Microsoft's best practices guide on SBS2008 installation. Beyond that, could there still be some configuration issue that could result in that kind of poor performance?

Any other thoughts and suggestions are welcome. The server is again performing fine since the changes mentioned above, but there was no definite resolution discovered, so I have no proof that it is resolved until time tells us otherwise.
