I have searched a lot on this subject, but don't seem to be able to find a definitive answer. I have a mixture of 2008 and 2003 servers at this time. I'm planning on refreshing my hardware and intend to move all my 2003 servers and most of my 2008 servers to 2012, but there are a few app servers that I have to keep on 2008.
What I would like to do is purchase 2 licences for Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter giving me unlimited virtual instances. What I am not sure about is whether I can downgrade one virtual instance to Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, but have all my other instances running as 2012? I heard a rumour that if I downgrade, I would be downgrading all my instances. Is this correct or can I just downgrade an individual virtual instance?
